Tyra, 26, grew up in the Yellow Hill community in Cherokee. She is a designer at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian and has held previous roles at the museum, including Cultural Specialist Coordinator, and being one of the Atsila Anotasgi Cultural Specialists. Tyra is also a former Miss Cherokee 2021-22 and is an active member in the community.
"For this shirt design, I wanted it to honor all Indigenous people. The hands are based on Mississippian shell designs to honor our ancestors and the colors of each hand correlates to the directional colors in Cherokee beliefs. By including each direction color, it also includes our Indigenous relatives from each direction. The Sun design in the center honors the fire, a sacred element for Cherokees."
